Guide to Choosing a Mattress for Your Sofa Bed

Comfort is personal. Selecting a sofa bed means paying close attention to its mattress. Whether you favour firm or soft, springs or foam, we offer rigorously tested options that are specially designed to work with our mechanism for lasting comfort.

Our Different Sofa Bed Mattresses

Standard (Bonnel) H14/18cm Built on biconical, helicoidal Bonnel springs in tempered steel, linked with a helical wire so the unit folds without damage. Delivers a relatively soft feel and is well suited to sofas kept closed for long periods. Available in Class 1 IM, British Standard, and CFR 1633 compliant versions.

Performance Foam Mattress CMS H14/18cm A soft, high-resilience polyurethane foam mattress—ideal for those who prefer foam over springs. Proven in deformation testing for comfort and durability, but not recommended for sofas left closed for extended periods. Available in British Standard and CFR 1633 compliant versions.

Pocket (Pocket Spring) H14cm Constructed with independent pocket springs. Compared with Bonnel units, each spring has a smaller diameter and the overall count is more than double—736 springs in a 160 × 200 cm mattress. The springs respond individually to body weight and contours, promoting an ergonomic sleeping posture. Semi-firm feel, suitable for everyday use. Also available in British Standard and CFR 1633 compliant versions.

Pocket Memo  H18 (Pocket Spring and memory foam) Constructed with independent pocket springs, each housed in a non-allergenic fabric sleeve for targeted response to body weight and contours. Both sides are padded with viscoelastic memory foam, which moulds to the body with minimal pressure to support healthy circulation. A perimeter box system reinforces the edges for stability and comfort when sitting on the side or getting in and out of bed. 

Memocomfort Features a low-resilience memory-foam comfort layer that gently moulds to the body. The reversible construction allows sleeping on either side to extend longevity. In testing, it showed no evidence of permanent deformation even after the sofa was left closed for extended periods. Available in British Standard and CFR 1633 compliant versions.

Sofa-Bed Mattress Softness Scale (1–6)

1 — Plush (very soft)
Deep “sink-in” feel; high pressure relief.
Recomended models:  Memocomfort.

2 — Soft
Gentle give; cushioned surface.
Recomended models: Peformance foam CMS, Standard (Bonnel)

3 — Medium-soft
Balanced comfort with underlying support.
Recomended models:Pocket Memo H18.

4 — Medium-firm (semi-firm)
Supportive for everyday use; lighter contouring.
Recomended models:Pocket (Pocket Spring)

5 — Firm
“Rather firm” feel; minimal sink-in.
Recomended models: None

6 — Extra-firm
Very firm, specialist/contract feel.
Recomended models: None 

Sensible Use & Care

• Rotate regularly to distribute wear; flip only if the mattress is double-sided.

• Holiday lets or infrequent use: leave the sofa half open when not in use to prevent prolonged compression of the mattress.

• Remove thick duvets before closing the sofa to prevent pressure marks and creasing

Important for foam mattresses,

All foam mattresses lose a small amount of resilience over time. If kept compressed for extended periods, they may also take a slight set in the folding areas. We use only high-quality foam grades so that, once opened and aired before use, the mattress recovers to near its original shape (within normal tolerances).
